Mary Nell Ferguson Haynes was born August 24, 1931 in Stevenson, AL, the daughter of Jess and Nancy Etta Fincher Ferguson and the youngest of five children. She made a profession of faith at the age of 13 and taught Sunday School for over 60 years, from age 17 until her health failed. She went to Washington, DC, at the age of 19 to work for the Government and was married there on December 18, 1954 to Air Force Staff Sergeant Willis Henry Haynes of Guston, KY. They were transferred to France for three years, where they adopted a German baby and named him Hunter Scott.
After Willis’ discharge in February 1959, they settled in Kentucky and adopted three other children as infants from the Spring Meadows Baptist Children’s Home in Louisville, KY – Wilson Keith, Nancy Roland and Bradley Kevin.
After retirement, she volunteered for Hardin Memorial Hospital, Hospice, Community Actions, Senior Citizens, the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and Jewish Health Center. She was a supporter or sponsor for Little League Baseball and Football and Cub Scouting for many years. She was the Ekron PTA President and has been a Substitute School Teacher in Meade and Breckinridge Counties and has also been a college instructor for Emory Riddle Aeronautical University. In addition to being a member of Baptist Churches in Alabama and Washington, DC, she was a member of Salem Baptist Church for over 57 years and has written devotionals for Southern Baptist publications on several occasions. She has been an avid supporter of charitable causes including the Meade County Backpack Program of Feeding America.
Willis preceded her in death on January 12, 1987. Mary Nell was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Opal and two brothers, Maurell and Paul. She is survived by four children, eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and a brother, Moses Daniel Ferguson of San Antonio, TX, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 15, 2018, at the Salem Baptist Church, with Rev. Billy Compton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hager Funeral Home in Brandenburg, from 12:00 Noon until 8:00 PM on Sunday, and at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of service on Monday.
