Elizabeth Wheatley Obituary

Elizabeth Anne “Liz” Wheatley, age 87, of Brandenburg, Kentucky, passed away at Harrison Springs Health in Indiana on November 10, 2022.  Born and raised on a farm close to Flaherty, she was baptized at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, the daughter of Bernard Spaulding and Rosalia (Hughes) Ritchie.  After finishing Meade County High School, where she was a cheerleader, she worked at Ft. Knox as a secretary.  A wonderful homemaker and loving mother, she enjoyed ball games, boating, Florida beaches and horse racing.  Her favorite day of the year was Derby Day.  She read the newspaper every day, loved to travel and entertain and was kind to everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Wheatley; her 1st husband, Cecil Smith; two grandchildren, Sarah (Smith) Hottell and Cale Brown; her sister, Delores Ilario; her brother, Joe Marion Ritchie; and her brother-in-law, Bruno Ilario.  She is survived by her sister, Shirley (Jerry) Miles; four children, Tim (Kittie) Smith, Kim Myers, Kenton (Sandy) Smith and Jamie (Steve) Cundiff; and four step children, Amanda (Tony) Brown, Pat (Leona) Wheatley, Becky (Don) Wells and Donna (Doug) Reed.

Her grandchildren are Joseph, Robey and Cynthia Smith, Kurt and Laura Myers, Sidney, Taylor and Kendell Smith, Abbigail Lilly, and Jonah, Max and Kimberly Cundiff.  Her step grandchildren are Anthony, Megan and Ned Brown, Patrick Wheatley, Christopher Lawson and Aaron and Julie Reed.  She has 29 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 14, 2022, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, with Rev. Pepper Elliott officiating.  Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church narthex beginning at 9:00 AM until the time of mass on Monday.  Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the donor’s charity of choice.
