Mr. Gene McGehee, age 76, of Brandenburg, KY, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022, at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington. Gene was born October 30, 1946, the son of Davis and Marie McGehee.
Gene was a 1965 graduate of Meade County High School and went on to further his education at Western Kentucky University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Master of Arts in Education, and Rank I in Guidance Counseling. While at WKU, Gene was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. Early in his career, he taught at Payneville Elementary School, and later, at Stuart Pepper Middle School.
Gene’s passion was farming. He operated Long Branch Farm, a livestock and grain farm outside Brandenburg, alongside his father and siblings. Gene especially loved breeding Polled Hereford cattle. He was a lifetime Member of the American Polled Hereford Association (now the American Hereford Association) and served as a National Director of the organization in the 1980’s – at a time when the organization and industry were progressing toward formal documentation of Hereford performance.
Later in life, Gene became involved in real estate development and management, obtaining his Kentucky Broker’s license in 2000.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Connie; and two brothers, Phillip and Tom McGehee. He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie McGehee-Shacklette and her husband, Jody, and Tricia Wright and her husband, Wesley; four grandchildren, Mason Shacklette, Collin Wright, Logan Shacklette, and Leah Wright; two brothers, Joe McGehee and Chris McGehee; two sisters, Mary Cross and Martha Ann McGehee; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 30, 2022, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, with Rev. Toan Do officiating. Burial will follow in the McGehee Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hager Funeral Home from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday and at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of mass on Friday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Baptist Health Hardin Cancer Center.
