Mr. Henry Matthews, Jr. passed away at his Brandenburg residence on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. He was 91 years old.
Born in Glen Dean, Kentucky, Henry proudly served in the U.S. Navy (1952-1956) on the Juneau cruiser as one of the ship's radio men, during the Korean War. He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Marie Sebastian, during this time. After his naval service, he landed a job at South Central Bell as a long-distance test tollman until he retired in 1995.
He was a sportsman of various things like fishing, baseball, basketball, horseshoes and golf, but he most loved physics, mechanics, electronics, constructions of all types, hobby farming, and playing cards.
He was also a dedicated Christian and was a deacon at Ekron Baptist Church for many years, where he also engineered general audio and weekly radio broadcasts of church services.
Henry was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret, his son, Michael, and his daughter, Debra. He is survived by his son, Kevin Matthews (Deborah Huber) and his second wife, Nellie Matthews.
Visitation will be held at Hager Funeral Home from 10:30 AM-6 PM on Sunday, October 22, 2023. A pre-burial visitation will ensue at 12 PM-1 PM, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM on Monday, October 23, 2023, at Ekron Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Curry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
