Joyce (Carter) Whelan

     Mrs. Joyce Whelan, age 89, of Guston, KY, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown, KY.  Mrs. Whelan was born on September 12, 1935, the daughter of Carlton Allen and Mary Emma (O’Bryan) Carter.

      Joyce was the matriarch of her family.  Her kids were her world, and she loved spending as much time with them as possible.  She was a talented seamstress through the years and even made her kids clothing as they were growing up.  She retired as a Supply Clerk for Civil Service.

            Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her granddaughter, Alexia Stith; four siblings, George and John Allen Carter, Carole (Roy Neil) Dowell, Audrey (Tom) Hamm; her brother-in-law, Ed Carnal; and her friend, John Brown.  She is survived by five children, Lisa (Alfred) Flaherty, Eric Whelan, Gina (Whitney) Stith, Carla (Michael) Hilse, and Bryan Whelan; five grandchildren, Erica (Alex) Hall, Lauren (Ervin Schuchart) Taylor, Corey (Andi) Whelan, Brandon Marsee, and Carly Stith; five great grandchildren, Harlow and Presley Whelan, Chance and Gianna Taylor, and Waylen Hall; and three sisters, Shayrn Bradley, Marinell Carnal, and Theresa (Bernie Hefner) Bibelhauser; and her sister-in-law, Mary Carter.

            A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, with Rev. Robert “Bud” Ray, officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be held at Hager Funeral Home from 9:30 AM until 1:30 PM on Saturday.  Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the MS Society, Alzheimer’s Association, or to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for Pediatric Cancer.
