Kenneth Gary Carter

Gary Carter passed away unexpectedly in a car accident on Friday, December 11, 2020. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 13, 1946 to Kenneth and Marian Carter. He was the second child of five. He met Donna in Louisville, fell in love, and they were married on February 2, 1991.

Gary was a loving husband, father, brother, friend, and neighbor. He was truly unaware of how much he was loved and how profoundly he affected the lives of those around him. Gary loved his wife. He and Donna spent every day together. He wrote her notes and kissed her forehead and gave her the tightest hugs. They worked in the yard and he chopped wood. He was known as Woodman Carter to some and The Beav to some very good friends because his favorite times were spent in the woods chopping up trees and stacking up ricks of perfectly seasoned firewood for his family and friends. He adored his son Todd, and daughters, Jennifer and Heather, and helped them in any way that he could. They need only say the word and he was there helping them and using his vast knowledge to build, dig, hammer and saw. He loved his grandchildren. He joked with Lindsey, Lily, Calvin (Snapdog) and Asia, but then he joked around with everyone. His humor was infectious, and we all loved when his bright blue eyes sparkled with his silly jokes. When he was in the room, there was sure to be laughter. We are going to miss that so much.

Gary and his family grew up in Louisville. They enjoyed get-togethers, celebrating birthdays, and telling a story or two. He was a Vietnam Veteran and Army Sergeant. By trade, he was the best Construction Superintendent in the world. After retirement, he used his knowledge to help others build beautiful things. He could do anything with a piece of lumber and was really crafty. Even though he was creative, knowledgeable and smart, it was his willingness to drop everything to help those around him and share his abilities that made him so special. We have all been blessed to know and love him.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Donna: Children, Todd Carter and his wife Mary and their daughter Asia; Jennifer Shelton and her husband Todd and their daughters Lindsey Carroll (Wyatt) and Lily; Heather Burks and her husband James Gunnoe and their son Calvin; his sister Sandy Behr and her husband Joe and their family; his sister Judy Staton and her husband Fred; his brother Dan Carter and his wife Pam and their family; his brother Bobby Carter and his parents KC and Marian (deceased); not to mention his friends and neighbors.

Visitation will be 12 pm to 7 pm on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Hager Funeral Home, 633 Bland Street, Brandenburg, KY with a prayer service at 7 pm. On December 22, 2020 at 1 pm, we will meet at Hager Funeral Home once again and then process to the Kentucky Veteran’s Cemetery, 2501 N. Dixie Blvd. in Radcliff for an interment ceremony at 2:30 pm.
