Larry Joseph Gagel, 83, of Brandenburg, KY, peacefully passed from this life Monday, April 19th, 2021 in his home. He was born in Louisville, May 7th, 1937 to his late parents Riley Joseph Gagel and Bernadine Grody Gagel.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Joan Glass Gagel; their children, Cheryl Lush (Larry), Stacie Jenkins (Barry; grandchildren, BJ Rhodes (Emily) , Danny Rhodes (Jennifer), Brittany Adams (Josh), Danelle Morales, Taylor Chadwick, and many great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Bernard “Shorty” Gagel (Vicki), Pat Pocker, and their families. He was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Gagel, who passed in April 2008.
Larry was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He and his wife Joanie moved their family from Louisville to Meade County in 1976 where he ran his company, Gagel Aluminum, for more than forty years. During his life, Larry entertained many passions including flying airplanes, boating and camping with friends and family, taking cross-country motorcycle trips with his wife to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and numerous other destinations, wintering at the Red Coconut in Fort Myers, Florida for many years, farming cattle, and raising a garden on his family farm just outside of Brandenburg. In his later years, while battling cancer, Larry could often be found enjoying a drink on his porch talking with friends and family after a long day of tending to his apartment rentals or working on the farm. A drink well deserved for a life well lived. Larry’s conversation and company will be sorely missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 23, 2021 at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church with Father Trumie Culpepper Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Visitation will be held at Hager Funeral Home from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Thursday and at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to consider donating to Mass of the Air, a program that allowed for he and Joanie to attend mass during this past year’s hardships or to Hosparus of Central Kentucky.
