Mr. Larry N. Wimpee, U.S. Army SFC Retired, age 78, of Brandenburg, formally of Battletown, passed away at his home on Friday, November 20, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born, December 17, 1941 in Scottsville, Allen County, Kentucky, the son of Homer Lewis and Lucille Bandy Wimpee.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his brother, Jerry, of Scottsville; his sisters, Reba Jo, of Lafayette, IN and Gracie, of Scottsville. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Janet, of Brandenburg; his daughters, Renee (Denny) Humphrey, of Battletown, Lisa (Mike) Passero, of Turnersville, NJ and Cathy True, of Louisville; his grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces; nephews and many friends.
Larry enlisted in the Army at the age of 17, served actively for 22 years. He was a Vietnam Veteran who received a purple heart during his service. He then worked as a U.S. Army Reserve Recruiter for 18 years receiving various awards including the prestigious 3D Sapphire Achievement Gold Recruiter Badge. He was a graduate of Columbia College; a retired Deputy Sheriff with the Meade County Sheriff’s Department of 21 years; a member of Harrison Masonic Lodge #122 F7AM where he was a Past Master; a Kosair Shriner; a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masons, where he was a 32 degree Red Hat; a member and past President of the Double Eagle Scottish Rite Club; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Irvington Lodge #544; a member of the Knights of Columbus; and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Otter Creek Lodge #067.
Larry loved traveling the world with this wife, riding ATVs with his family and friends, the outdoors, hunting and was an avid fisherman. He always had a smile on his face, a joke to tell and never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by all who know him.
Funeral and graveside services will be held privately for Larry’s immediate family only due to the COVID-19 mandates issued by the Governor of Kentucky. The service will be streamed online to the Hager Funeral Home Facebook page beginning at approximately 11:15 AM on Wednesday, December 2, 2020. Graveside services, with full military honors, will be held at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, KY, and will also be streamed online. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hosparus of Central Kentucky.
