Mrs. Martha Nell “Meme” Barger, age 89, of Irvington, KY, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at the Extended Care Facility of Breckinridge Health. Mrs. Barger was born December 5, 1931, the daughter of James Hubert and Sarah Eula (Hall) Hardesty. She loved quilting and farming with her beloved husband. One of her greatest achievements was surviving the 1974 tornado in Brandenburg.
Mrs. Barger was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Kenny “Peeps” Barger; two children, Janice Barger and Michael “Mike” Barger; her grandson, Bradley Rhodes; and two sisters, Laverne Thomas and Carol “Cricket” Fackler. She is survived by two children, Sharon Bruner and her husband, Eddie, and Gary Barger; her daughter-in-law, Dale Barger; seven grandchildren, Josh (Paula) Barger, Shannon (Jeremy) Vessels, Jeremy (Kristin) Barger, Sarah (Travis) Shacklette, Chris (Megan) Crable, Danielle (Brock) Wiltshire and Gary Nelson (Paige) Barger; seven great grandchildren, Cole and Clay Vessels, Avery and Drake Shacklette, Dalton Barger and Abi and Madison Crable; her sister, Sheila (Rodney) Pickering; four brothers, Sonny (Betty) Hardesty, Jerry (Carolyn) Hardesty, Larry (Jane) Hardesty and Wayne (Judy) Hardesty; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be privately held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, for Mrs. Barger’s immediate family only, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The funeral mass will be streamed online to the Hager Funeral Home Facebook page, beginning at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the WHAS Crusade for Children, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Hager Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
