It is with great sadness that the family of Melvin Harvey Steadman, 75, of Guston, Kentucky announce his passing on February 14, 2019. Born, September 4, 1943 in Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania, he grew up and spent most of his life in Herman, Pennsylvania. Melvin proudly served his country for 30 years in the United States Army. He worked at and retired from the U.S. Department of the Army as a civilian employee at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was a long time member of the American Legion Post 113 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky; the Roman Catholic Men’s Club of Herman, Pennsylvania; the Herman Volunteer Fire Department in Pennsylvania; and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. Melvin also served many years with the Boys Scouts of America, first as a den leader then worked his way up to become Cub Master of Pack 39 in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was also the assistant Cub Master for Pack 16 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Melvin enjoyed woodworking, gardening and his 1929 Model A Ford. He took great joy in sharing how he obtained the Model A in pieces, carried it home in laundry baskets then built it from the ground up when he was just 17 years old.
Melvin was preceded in death by his mother, Genevieve Schnur Steadman, his father Harvey Steadman and his older brother Robert Lawrence Steadman. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gladys Marie Andring Steadman, his daughter Melanie (James) Thoma with two grandsons, Nicholas and Michael and a son Melvin (Laurie) Steadman with a granddaughter Elizabeth and a grandson Tyler.
In following his last wishes, there will be no visitation. A private family graveside service will be held at Historic Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina. Melvin will be buried with full military honors.
