Obituary

Robert Kelly Powell, age 58, died unexpectedly early Friday morning, April 21st at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown, KY.  He was born on January 14, 1965, to James E. “Sonny” and Shirley Bishoff Powell, in Elizabethtown, KY.  He was a 1983 graduate of Meade County High School.  While in high school, he excelled in electricity classes at the Meade County Vocational School and won several trophies.  He served in the U. S. Navy from 1983 to 1984.  With the exception of his stint in the Navy and a year of living in South Carolina, he was a life-long resident of Meade County.   Kelly was a jack of all trades but for most of his life he worked in carpentry. His last job was at Zappos in Louisville, Kentucky.   Kelly loved wrestling, fishing, working outdoors, and building anything, including some very innovative lawnmowers and cars for his grandchildren.  He was always ready to lend a helping hand and gave up much of his free time to help family and friends.  Kelly was also a member of the Ekron City Council.

Kelly was preceded in death by his father, James “Sonny”; his grandparents, James and Maggie Powell and Alpha and Zula Bishoff; and his in-laws, Benny and Cora Tichenor.  He is survived by his mother, Shirley Powell, of Brandenburg, Kentucky, his wife of  39 years, Maureen Tichenor Powell;  three daughters, Candace Gunthner, and her husband, Zack, of Jeffersonsville, Indiana,  Korey Martin, and her husband, Billy, of Brandenburg, and Jessica Powell, and her fiancé, Scott Cain, of Battletown;  his grandchildren, Farrah Hinton, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, Kylee, Hayden and Abbie Martin, of Brandenburg, Cora Powell, of  Ekron,, and Lucas and Kelly Cain of Battletown;  his step-mother, Kearon Powell, of  Lebanon Junction;  two brothers, Mike Powell, and his wife, Jill, of Guston, and Jeremy Powell, and his wife, Diana, of Vine Grove; his sister, Tammie Beasley, and her husband, Doug, of Guston; two step-sisters, Rita  Kahill and Timmy Warren, of Boston and Sheila Fields, of Lebanon Junction; his step-brother, Vic Kahill, and his wife, Vicky, of Hodgenville;  two aunts, Alma Lambert, of Radcliff, and Annetta  Mangrum, and her husband, Lester, of Brandenburg; his uncle, Larry Powell, and his wife, Pam, of Brandenburg; several nieces and nephews, and hundreds of cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the chapel of Hager Funeral Home with Rev. Gary True officiating. Burial will follow in Weldon Christian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM on Monday and from 9:00 AM until the time of service on Tuesday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the funeral home to aid the family with funeral expenses.
